Assess Your Skills

A lot of people say that you need to jump in but this could be a waste of time if you are not intimately familiar with the field of Artificial Intelligence. AI is not just one technology but several very diverse and specialized disciplines.

A great place to start is to assess your own skills and do your research. Go online and learn more about the different applications that can be produced from a specific field in artificial intelligence and find what you like the most. For example, self-driving cars use computer vision while social media apps use recommendation systems.

Once you have decided on what you want to build find the one that is complimented by your current strengths and specialties.

Learn New Skills

While it is great to take courses online they should not be your focus. What is most important is the self-motivation required to learn any new skill.

Start with your end goal in mind. What is something new that you want to bring into this world? Think about a problem that keeps you up at night thinking about it. Then go solve it.

Taking this approach you will seek out new technologies and learn the skills necessary to engage with them.

A great way to accelerate this process is by taking courses but with the objective of learning something specific. Leaving the course once you learn what you need. Online courses are great for foundation building but you should not just sit for hours watching videos.

Apply Your Skills

Let’s be honest, we don’t just want to grow in the field of AI. We want to accelerate as quickly and as high as possible.

It may make sense to ask for new opportunities at your current company or look for new things you can do on the side you are missing the point. Massive growth that is worthy of a new position only happens when you are thrown into the fire. When you challenge yourself.

The best place to do this is through hardcore interviewing. Take days off of work to go interview with your competition for positions that you want. You will quickly see where your experience is lacking or where you have sufficient skills for the position that you want.

It will also put you in a position of self-validation and independence.

Showcase Your Skills

Getting experience and learning is important but now you need to go out into the world and showcase what you have learned. This is often the hardest part for most because you have to be vulnerable. Opening yourself up for judgement.

Shift your perspective. It is not about you or your experience. It’s about results. Or more simply said, what have you done that other would want?Either on your own or have part of a team have you shown that the business has improved from your being there?

Taking this perspective removes the weight from your shoulders. No longer do you go into interviews or take on assignments thinking, “Am I good enough for this?” instead you let your work speak for you. A bonus: you know what you continually improve.

Improve Your Skills

Something important to note as we move on to improving your skills is the shift in the market causes by the mass adoption of AI. You can no longer become a master at a specific topic to remain competitive. Expert trained AI will be able to do any one task better than you can. AI models have already beat the best in the world at law, medical exams, mathematics, and gaming.

This may sound depressing but it is actually a reason to get excited. You can now specialize in a number of tasks. The most valuable in the marketplace will be those that are able to integrate expert systems.

Start thinking in terms of systems and solutions instead of specific skills. The specifics will soon be handled by AI.

Enjoy Your Skills

You don’t need to be passionate about something to enjoy it. There is something to be said about mastery and progress.

Look at every day as an opportunity to get closer to the goals that we discussed at the beginning of the article. You will wake up energized and excited to put in the hours it takes to excel in your field.

The best part about the field of software and technology is that you can bring your efforts to life. You can sit down for several hours and literally see what you have learned and the impact it could have on the world.
